Veni Sancte Spiritus

from The Rock Mass by Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra

/

about

The Spirit of God is the air we breathe, the pervading presence that sustains all things, the outward reach of the divine embrace. Though many live their lives blind and deaf to her presence, we live and move in the Spirit of God. She is the fire of God: the emanation and revelation of the divine, calling us home, drawing us back to the source of all love. She is the gentle voice, often no louder than a heartbeat, that calls to our hearts.
This is no holy ‘ghost’—no phantom, no apparition of shadow: though not physical, she is more substantial than the fragile coalitions of atoms that we call matter. She is God—the Spirit of the triune mystery. Our obsession with matter, lives and houses filled with things, has kept us in the shallows of life, robbed us of a deeper awareness: the call of the Spirit reminds us that we too are spirit beings—made in God’s image.
It may seem strange to pray ‘come Holy Spirit’ as if she was waiting on some distant horizon, as if her presence did not surround us daily. But this simple, ancient prayer expresses the deep need of the human heart for the divine embrace, the kiss of life: it is to acknowledge her presence, to reach out with open arms like an expectant child in the submission of love.
It is, of course, a dangerous song to sing, a dangerous prayer to pray, for you cannot embrace fire without being changed.

lyrics

O lux beatissima
Reple cordis intima
Tuorum fidelium
Sine tuo numine
Nihil est in homine
Nihil est innoxium

[O most blessed radiance
Fill the inmost heart
Of your faithful ones
Without your divine presence
We have nothing in us –
Nothing that is not harmful]

Spirit born of holy fire
Emanation of desire
Radiant being of light
Wind of heaven, breath of God
Life-imparting spirit-song
Kissing creation with life

Embrace this child of earth with heaven’s fire
Renew this broken heart to love again
Enfold me in your arms and lift me higher
Spirit come and make us new
Healing power flowing through
Comforter we call to you

Renovate the wounded soul
Recreate where love is cold
Driving the shadows away
Gift of life from open hand
Rain upon this thirsty land
Come Holy Spirit we pray

Embrace this child of earth with heaven’s fire
Renew this broken heart to love again
Enfold me in your arms and lift me higher
Spirit come and make us new
Healing power flowing through
Spirit hear us calling —

Veni sancte spiritus
Et emitte caelitus
Liucis tuae radium
Veni lumen cordium

[Come Holy Spirit
And send from heaven
The radiance of your light
Come, light of our hearts]

Come, come, come

John de Jong UK

I grew up with a slightly schizophrenic interest in both English and American folk-blues and traditional English hymns. I've always been passionate about the acoustic guitar, but in recent recent years my tastes have expanded somewhat. The Rock Mass is evidence of this. Hope you enjoy the music! ... more
